Company’s Faces: Pavel Kormilets
I developed a passion for hillwalking while I was attending Tomsk Polytechnic Institute, where I joined a hillwalking club. Unlike rock climbing, hillwalking means both ascending peaks and hiking, sometimes several hundred kilometres. I once completed a 500 kilometre trek across the Pamir Mountains with my companions. This was followed by a very challenging route in the Fann Mountains that brought us the title of the USSR champions in 1980.
Mountains are mesmerising. They make people show their true colours. You have to trust your ropemate 100%. My experience in trek leading came in handy in EMERCOM, where I had worked before joining Transneft. In 1994, I helmed the rescue team that arrived at Iturup Island of the Kuril Islands soon after a powerful earthquake. I was awarded a Medal For Life Saving.
